Why?

Why would the federal government attempt to prohibit states from recognizing same-sex marriage?

I just really, really don't understand how same-sex marriage effects our national security, our economy, or our education system to name a few. So how is this a government issue?

Same-sex marriage pushes the buttons of the 'religious'. Why? Because it's a sin for a man to lie with another man? Okay, then it's a sin. But does that mean he gets to be punished by government? Homosexuals have committed a 'religious' sinful act and as such government now thinks they are entitled to take away the 'civil' rights of an entire group of people?

Fine, why don't we do that for all sins? Much too hard, much too time consuming you say? Well, what if we focused specifically on sins that might effect the rights of married people?

All you adulterers out there, you don't get to the right to refuse to testify against your spouse. You sinned, you should be punished by the government.

All you people who engaged in pre-marital sex, you don't get share the health or insurance benefits of your future partner. You sinned, you should be punished by the government.

All you people who got divorced, well, well, well, you're sinners too. And if you got remarried I see no reason why the government should recognize your second marriage as valid. You shouldn't have the same rights as people who stick it out, work through it, stay married. Nope, you should never be allowed to adopt children. You should never be allowed to make medical decisions for incapacitated partner. You should never be able to visit hospitals during visitation hours and be notified of a partner's condition. You should never be able to sue for wrongful death, the emotional distress caused by a partner's death or injury, and loss of consortium caused by death or injury. You should never be able to collect Social Security benefits upon death of a spouse. You will be denied all 1,049 rights that good, non-divorced, non-adulterous, non-premarital sex having, married couples have. You sinned, you should be punished by the government.

Got that? Good.

Look, if you want to be opposed to homosexuality on a religious level, fine. But don't push that over into government because it's your hot button issue. Because if you do it's only a matter of time before the next hot button issue comes up and that issue might just have to do with taking away your rights. There are 667 sins mentioned in the Bible, which one is next, which one is yours?

When the government starts legislating the denial of rights to it's citizens it's time to start asking yourself some serious questions about the country you call home.
